WooCommerce → Magento: When and how to migrate
When it makes sense to switch, risks, migration plan, what to keep and what to rebuild.

When NOT to migrate
If you process < 500 orders a month with a 1-2 person team — WooCommerce is more than enough. Magento makes sense when:
- You run multiple stores off a single catalog
- > 50,000 SKUs
- Complex B2B with price lists, limits, approval workflows
- Multi-language (more than 3 languages)
- Multi-currency with dynamic rates
What is preserved
- Products with attributes and variations
- Categories
- Orders (history)
- Customers (no passwords — Woo hashes differently)
- Media (manually via S3 or by moving /uploads)
What’s better rebuilt
- Theme: WooCommerce themes do not port to Magento
- Payments: Woo plugins ≠ Magento plugins
- Shipping: same story
- Admin workflow: team training is mandatory
Tools
LitExtension, Cart2Cart — paid but fast (24-48 hours). For heavy-duty migrations — our pipeline: export via WP CLI → Magmi JSON datapump → import.
Downtime
If the migration is prepared in parallel and the DNS cutover takes 2-3 hours, downtime can be kept at 15-30 minutes. For a store with 100 orders/day that’s ~2-4 orders.
